Renovation of the Stephanion Observatory
OUR MISSION
The Need for Renovation
Between 2020 and 2024, the observatory underwent a long-awaited renovation that completely transformed the site. After 54 years without maintenance, the buildings had fallen into extreme disrepair. The metal roofs were rusted through, allowing rain and wind to damage ceilings, floors, and equipment. Walls had cracked, doors no longer closed properly, and some structures were barely safe to enter.
Outside, the surrounding plot had turned into a dense jungle of overgrown pine trees and tangled underbrush, hiding much of the observatory from view. Paths and service areas were lost beneath vegetation, making access difficult for everyone.
Over four years of dedicated restoration, the entire site was revitalized. Buildings were repaired, roofs replaced, and essential systems modernized. The grounds were cleared and landscaped, restoring open sightlines and safe movement. Importantly, new accessibility features were added, including level entryways, improved paths, ramps, and handrails, ensuring that disabled visitors can now reach and enjoy the observatory comfortably.
Today, the observatory stands renewed and welcoming—a dramatic contrast to the neglected site it once was. What seemed destined for ruin has become a vibrant, functional, and inclusive space ready to inspire curiosity for years to come.
